Anthropometry and Today's Ergonomics of Furniture
Furniture is an indispensable part of human life. Both today and in ancient times, furniture has always adorned people's living spaces, enabled people to live more comfortably and comfortably, and provided job opportunities for carpenters and similar furniture manufacturers.
The first wooden furniture dates back to BC. Its history can be traced back to the Egyptian Pharaohs in 2700 BC. It is clearly seen that furniture has been in our lives for at least the last 5000 years. It is stated that the first furniture samples were made in Egypt in ancient times. Wooden furniture from the period continues to be exhibited in museums today. Ash, Yew, Ebony, Elm, Boxwood and Linden trees, which are unique to the Egyptian region, were preferred in the production of these furniture. Anthropometry (human body measurements) was first used in this period, and the first furniture samples emerged.
It is also possible to describe anthropometry as a branch of science that deals with certain physical properties and dimensions of the body, such as the motionless state of a certain part of the body, center of gravity and volume.
It is aimed that the furniture that will be produced since ancient times is suitable for the human body. Whether a piece of furniture will be functional or not, of course, is related to whether a piece of furniture is comfortable and usable. If a piece of furniture is disproportionate to human body size, it is largely dysfunctional. Because, the main task of a furniture is to provide comfort, which is the production purpose. The existence of furniture produced for different purposes will not change this fact, because the furniture we talk about in this article is the kind of furniture we use in our homes. For this reason, Anthropometry, that is, the physical characteristics and dimensions of the human body, also play an important role in furniture production. If a piece of furniture is produced in a way that is not suitable for the average human body, it will be largely useless.
